Doctor appointment!

We had Luke's 4 month check up last week. Yes, he is a B.I.G. boy!! 18 lb.,6 oz. and 27 3/4 inches long! Holy Guacamole!

I went into the appointment with a few questions. It had been 2 months since his last, and he was only 2 months at his last, so a lot has changed without having a visit to the doc. Since about 2 months, Luke has had a sort of flat spot on his head. He ALWAYS wants to sleep looking toward the left. We began re-positioning and trying to do lots more tummy time (which he HATES). Over the last month or two, it really hasn't helped a lot. Maybe I should have forced tummy time, but I really don't think it's ok to let him lay there and have a melt-down. And yes, it was nothing short of a melt-down. Sweaty forehead and massive tears, not to mention is tomato colored face and screams at the top of his lungs. I just really don't know if that's ok? I'm all for not picking up your baby at the slightest sound, but I just don't know about the aneurysm screams, as we like to call it. So fast forward to his appointment and of course the doctor notices his head. I kind of felt like he was getting onto me and I left there feeling really guilty about my care. I cried that night thinking his flat head was my fault for not taking a more active approach. But, I really have no idea what that would be. All we were told was to do more tummy time. Ugh. So yeah, he has a flat head and of course, this time, all the doctor said was to do more tummy time! What? I just don't understand. So since, we've really been working on getting him to like it more and keeping him completely off his head during the day unless it's nap time, when I lay him on his side, only! The doctor said he will just watch it and at his next appointment reassess. He mentioned a helmet if it doesn't straighten out in the next few months. What? I don't want my baby to have to wear a helmet! Shouldn't there be something more pro-active we can do? Well, I started doing some research and found a pillow made by Boppy. It's called a Noggin Nest. It has a little doughnut cut out so there's no pressure on the back of his head when he's lying. So we'll see. I ordered it last night. His next appointment will be in January, so I'm hoping these next 2 months will be much more productive. I've had some people tell me their babies had flat heads, too, and they turned out fine! Anyway, so yeah, I feel like I win the worst mom award!!! I guess the mommy guilt is all part of it.

He also asked if he was rolling over. I said no, and his response? "Ok, I'll check him out for any problems." Excuse me? I just am not sure about this doctor. He's not very helpful, and he tells a first time mom that he will check her baby out for problems because he's not rolling over yet at 4 months. I'm no expert, but I thought all babies kinda have their own timing. I even read on baby center at someone's post saying their baby didn't roll until 11 months and walked 2 weeks later. I don't know. I just kinda left the appointment feeling a little deflated.

Other than that, Luke is developing perfectly! He is super healthy, and the doctor said he's very proportionate even though he is off the chart for height and weight. hehe.

We just love him so much and are SO blessed by his presence in our lives. Any advice or encouragement would be greatly appreciated!!

My 4 month old!

Luke is 4 months old, today!!

How is this happening? I still am amazed sometimes that I'm actually a mom, and I have a son! (Who is precious, by the way)

Lately, Luke has accomplished some pretty amazing things! He can now hold his head up all on his own...no more bobbling! He also is talking up a storm and has found his hands. He loves to slobber on everything and chew on anything close to his mouth.

About 3 weeks ago, we tried his jumper toy. He was still not quite tall enough to touch the floor and his head was a tad loose to sit in it by himself. Last night he was just crazy with energy, so we got the jumper out again. He LOVED it!! At first he was a tad unsure, but after a minute or so, he figured out it was tons of fun! It was fun for mommy and daddy, too!

Wednesday is his 4 month check up so we'll get to see how much he's grown! We can't wait!

We're working on rolling over. He's got a little while before this happens, I think, but that's ok! Can't wait to see what month 5 brings!
